When Stephanie hung up the phone, Emma didn’t know what to do. She quietly put her phone down on the table and sank to the couch, listening to the clock ticking, the silence making her heartbeat seem louder than ever. It was a bit like when she played hide-and-seek when she was little, and someone was looking for her. Her heart would beat quickly, as it did now.

The feeling of some unknown man trying to capture her made her shudder. So, she decided to spend the rest of the day decoding Kendrick’s journal and focusing on her best memories of him, hoping to take her mind off things. Stephanie returned home in the evening, her face downcast and pale. Emma hugged her, worried that something was wrong with Stephanie, who looked back at her with tired eyes.

“Stephanie, what’s wrong?”

Stephanie sighed and loosened herself from Emma’s grip. “Nothing, I’m just tired.”

“Should I make you something to eat?’

“Yeah, a cup of coffee would be great. Thanks.”

“Something is on your mind,” Emma insisted.

“This is just a lot to deal with,” Stephanie admitted, sitting on the couch. “I’ve been worried about you. I know you loved Kendrick more than anything. His death will affect you forever; I only wish there was a way I could take your pain away.

“And I feel bad for not telling you about seeing him with someone else before. A good sister would’ve said something. I should’ve opened up to you. Then maybe you’d have the answers that are now so much more difficult to find.”

“You are a wonderful sister,” Emma assured her. “The best, truly. It was hard when you first told me about it, but now I forgive you. I need you. I’m going to be okay. We’ll get through this together.”

“Together,” Stephanie repeated.

The two sisters hugged, their hearts feeling slightly less broken.
